Bird on a Wire
ABOUT THE WINEMAKER Winemaker, Caroline Mooney, grew up in the Yarra Valley from the age of 3mths on a farm in Yering (now the Yarra Valley Dairy Handmade Farmhouse Cheese) still owned and run by her family. Spending the weekends shifting cattle and sheep on horseback, working in the cattle yards, feeding out and general farm life was, in her mind, the perfect way to grow up. It was also the beginning of her love for the seasons of the Yarra Valley – mushrooming in Autumn, short Winter days, the emergence of Spring and cutting hay and the race to get it in the shed before a summer storm. Her wine interest was sparked by her father’s love of collecting wine and opening special bottles for birthdays, Christmas or a family gathering. Caroline started working in the wine industry in 1995 managing cellar door sales at Yarra Ridge but soon found herself more interested in the vineyard and winemaking process. WHERE IT ALL BEGAN In 2000 she travelled to South Australia to do her first vintage with Hardy’s Tintara in McLaren Vale to test her physical resolve. At 27, following this first vintage, she enrolled at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga to study Wine Science. In July 2000 Caroline returned to the Yarra Valley and took up a cellar hand position with the Yering Station winemaking team headed by Tom Carson, working her way up to Assistant Winemaker by 2004. She completed her Wine Science degree in 2006, the same year she travelled to Hermitage in France’s Rhône Valley to join her new husband working at one of the most highly regarded and respected producers, J.L. Chave. On her return to Yering Station she worked her way up to winemaker prior to her leaving in 2008 to pursue her own winemaking goals with Bird On A Wire Wines.
