OUR VINEYARD We make Warramunda Estate wines to reflect ‘their terroir’ – the distinct place in which they are grown in Coldstream. As such, the work we do in the vineyard is vital. Covering some fifty-five acres, the vineyard has a mix of Syrah, Cabernet, Marsanne, Viognier and Pinot Noir plantings. In 2015, we converted 23 rows of Cabernet Sauvignon to include Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot, in a plan to produce a Bordeaux blend in future. Work in the vineyard focuses on providing the vines with the optimum ability to produce impressive fruit every vintage, regardless of the weather and conditions. We are in the process of arch-cane pruning all blocks and we use only organic sprays to keep fungus, harmful insects and disease at bay. Our vineyard team spends a considerable amount of time attending to each vine in each vineyard block to ensure the vines are lifted, thinned, healthy and reflecting their natural growth patterns. CLIMATE The Yarra Valley is one of Australia’s most-famed cool climate wine regions. The mild, temperate climate of warm summers, crisp winters and generous winter/spring rainfall create the ideal environment for producing premium wine grapes. Our northerly aspect, ensures our vines receive maximum sunshine exposure which is essential for balanced grape development and vine growth. GEOLOGY Much of the estate straddles bedrock composed of sedimentary sandstone and a series of sub and topsoils. The soil is relatively acidic but quite porous providing favourable drainage. The position and attributes of the vineyard are close to perfect for the varieties we grow. The vines are north-facing and on a downward slope, providing essential drainage down to the flats of the Yarra River. We are just a short distance from the Warramate Hills which provide a natural shield, and where we are nestled along with well-established winery neighbours such as Yeringberg, Oakridge, Coldstream Hills and Yarra Yering.
